I don’t know about you, but for me the taste of fruits and vegetables I buy at the supermarket has grown bland over the years. Perhaps it’s my aging taste buds, or maybe it’s a sense of nostalgia that’s clouding my view. Or perhaps more likely it’s the genetic modifications and mass production of grocery store fruits and vegetables that are the true culprits. Whatever the reason, I always find the fresh fruits and vegetables available at farmers markets more… well, fresh!
So don’t be surprised to see me first in line 8:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23rd, when the second annual Downtown Wildwood Farmers Market opens its doors. Really there are no doors, just a big open lot chock full of vendors, but you get the gist. The market opens every Saturday during the summer from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and is located at the corner of Pacific & Schellenger Avenues in Wildwood, NJ.
What to Expect
The Wildwood Farmers Market hosts a wide variety of goods, including of course, fruits and vegetables. In addition, however, you can also find items such as plants, flowers, baked goods, honey, herbs, meats, cheeses, seafood, nuts, prepared food and drinks, wine (yes, wine) and more! Also included this year will be family entertainment (I don’t have details on this so you’ll just have to stop by for yourself and see).
In addition to the Saturday morning farmers market, every Tuesday night during the summer the market grounds will play host to Family Movie Night on a large outside screen. Enjoy dinner at one of the several restaurants located in and around Pacific Avenue, then stop in around dusk for a family-oriented outdoor movie. Check back here for a schedule of movies.
Bring a big bag (or two) with you. It’s good for the environment and since you’ll be visiting many different vendors, you can stash your goods in one container for easier carrying.
For the movie night, you should probably bring chairs or a blanket. The grounds start out grassy, but constant use tends to produce some dirt patches.
Wildwood Underground Recommends
No recommendations concerning the Wildwood Farmers Market yet. We’ll be frequenting the market then posting back with a list of our favorite vendors and goods, so check back later!
For lunch or dinner, we strongly recommend the Alumni Grill. Their pricing is very reasonable and their food is out of this world. Menu categories include fresh handmade burgers, steak sandwiches, wraps, paninis, and other specialty items. They also have a nice kid’s menu. It’s right across from the farmers market — you can’t miss it!
